Brinjal Gosthu | Kathirikai Kothsu | Side dish for Idli, Pongal

Brinjal Gosthu
Brinjal Gothsu / Kathirikai Gothsu is a famous South Indian side dish that usually accompanies with idli and pongal. It goes very well with idli than dosa. It is a perfect blend of spicyness and sourness. Here the brinjal onion paste is cooked in a tamarind sauce. This is a very simple and quick recipe. Just give it a try and let me know the feedback.

Ingredients:

Brinjal - 4
Small onion - 1 cup
Tamarind - gooseberry sized
Red chilli - 3
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Urad dal / Uzhatham Paruppu- 1 tsp
Channa dal / Kadala Paruppu - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - 3 sprigs
Coriander leaves - to garnish
Asafoetida - a generous pinch
Gingely oil / Nallennai - 4 tblspn

To roast and grind:

Coriander seeds / Dhaniya- 2 tsp
Kadala Paruppu - 1 tsp
Red chilli -7

Method:

For Gothsu Powder:

In a pan, drizzle little oil and start roasting channa dal. When it starts to change its color, add coriander seeds and red chillies. Cool them a bit and grind it to a smooth powder.

For Gothsu:

Peel the skin of small onion and slit the brinjals lenthwise.

Heat a pan, add small onion. Saute for a min and add in brinjal. Stir fry till brinjal becomes soft. Let it cool for some minutes and blend them coarsely.

Now, heat the same pan, add mustard seeds. When mustard starts to pop, add some broken red chillies.

Then, add a teaspoon of urad dal dal, channa dal and lots of curry leaves.

To this, add the tamarind juice which is extracted from a gooseberry sized tamarind.

Once it boils, add the ground brinjal and cook for a while. Add the prepared gothsu powder, salt, turmeric and simmer it for 10 mins.

Garnish with coriander leaves and put off the flame.

Serve hot with Idli or pongal.

In a pan, drizzle little oil and first roast channa dal. When it starts to change color, add in coriander seeds followed by 6 to 7 red chilli(I reduced dry chilli and added chilli powder later)

Cool down a bit and grind them into a smooth powder. This is the gothsu powder used for preparing brinjal gothsu.

Heat oil in the same pan and stir fry for a min. Add brinjal and saute till onion and brinjal turns soft

Grind sauteed onion, brinjal coarsely and keep it aside

Now, heat little gingely oil and add mustard seeds
add chilli
When mustard starts to pop, add 3 broken red chillies
Immediately, add channa dal and urad dal
and little curry leaves
Now, add the tamarind extract an allow let it boil
Add in coarsely ground brinjal onion mixture and cook for a while
To this, add the brinjal gothsu powder which we prepared earlier
Add salt to taste
and turmeric and simmer for 10 to 15 mins
Garnish with coriander leaves and put off the flame
