Puttu / Steam cake is a popular breakfast dish in South
India, especially in Kerala and Tamilnadu. This method of puttu is done using
rice flour. You can also do this using wheat, tapioca, ragi or corn. It is best
served with banana, sugar or payiru and pappadam.

Grated coconut – 1 cup
Water – as required
Salt – to taste
To check for right consistency, you should be able to form a shape when you hold it and also should be easily crumbled.
Add water to the bottom vessel of the puttu maker and let it boil for a minute.
Now place the holed disc inside the puttu maker. First spread some coconut followed by puttu flour. Alternatively fill it with coconut and puttu flour until you reach the top of funnel. The top and bottom layer should be coconut.
Attach it to the vessel and steam it for 5 minutes. Puttu is
done.
Serve hot with banana, sugar and payiru.

Ingredients:
Rice flour/ Puttu flour – 1 cupGrated coconut – 1 cup
Water – as required
Salt – to taste
Method:
Take puttu flour in a mixing bowl and add salt to it.
Sprinkle water little by little and mix well until you get a
moist and coarse texture. At this stage the flour should be like breadcrumbs.

Now push the bottom disc gently with the knife or with a
spatula so that it comes out clean.

Notes:
- If you don’t have puttu maker place the flour in idly pot and steam it for 10 minutes. This way you can use a bowl to get a shape.
