Puliyodharai | Tamarind Rice

Prep Time: 10 mins | Cooking Time: 30 mins | Serves: 3

Ingredients:

Cooked Rice - 2 cups
Tamarind - Big lemon sized
Peanuts - 2 tblspn
Channa dal / Kadalai Paruppu - 1 tsp
Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida / Perungayapodi - 1/4 tsp
Red chilli - 3
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - 2 sprigs
Salt - to taste
Sesame oil / Nallennai - 3 tblspn

To roast and grind:

Coriander seeds - 2 tblspn
Red chilli - 3 to 5
Channa dal / Kadalai Paruppu - 2 tsp
Urad dal - 1 tblspn
Sesame seeds / Ellu - 1 tblspn
Fenugreek - 1/2 tsp

Method:

Soak tamarind in little water and to extract a thick paste. Keep aside.

Drizzle little oil and roast the ingredients listed under "to roast and grind". Cool it and grind it to a fine powder.

Roast the peanut till it turns brown. Transfer it to a bowl.

In the same pan, heat sesame oil and add mustard seeds. When it splutters, add channa dal, urad dal, red chilli and roast till it becomes brown. Then, add the roasted peanut, curry leaves, asafoetida and turmeric.

Immediately add the tamarind extract, salt and let it boil till it becomes thick.

Now, add the ground powder and boil for 1 or 2 minutes. Put off the flame and add the cooked rice. Mix well to incorporate with each rice grains.

Serve with potato roast and papad.

Note:
  • Make a thick paste, otherwise you will have to boil the tamarind extract till it thickens.

Add in salt to taste
add puliyogare powder
Now, add the ground powder
boil it
Boil for 1 or 2 minutes and put off the flame
pour into rice
Add this to the cooked rice.
mix well
Mix well to incorporate with each rice grains.
Puliyodharai Ready
Serve with potato roast!
