Vengaya Kara Kuzhambu

This recipe is sinfully easy to make. You don't want to spend long time in kitchen. It only takes 10 minutes to cook this. And you don't want to be nearby all the time. It is seriously very very easy to make. The only hardest part in this dish is peeling the skin of onion.

I recommend bachelors to bookmark this recipe. It requires very less ingredients. You can skip even dry chillies, fenugreek and make it even more simpler. I hope you will try this at home. Here goes the recipe.

Vengaya Kara Kuzhambu

Shallots / Small Onion - 20
Tamarind - small lemon sized
Sambar powder - 3 tblspn
Jaggery - 1 tsp
Red Chilli - 1(optional)
Salt - as needed

To Temper:

Musard seeds - 1 tsp
Channa dal - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - a sprig
Fenugreek - 1/4 tsp(optional)
Gingelly oil / Nallenai - 2tblspn


Soak tamarind in warm water and extract its juice. Peel the skin of onions and keep aside.

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds. When it starts to splutter, add fenugreek(optional), channa dal.

Add in onions, sauté for 2mins until it becomes soft.

Add sambar powder and curry leaves. Sauté for few seconds.

Then, add in tamarind extract,salt and 2 cups of water.

Close the lid and cook for 10-15mins at medium heat. When the oil separates and remove from heat.

Serve hot with rice and pappad. Enjoy!

  • Adding fenugreek and red chilli is optional. You can skip this too.
  • If you want it to be thick add a tsp of rice flour.
  • If you do not have jaggery, you can add sugar.


Keep all your ingredients ready
soak tamarind
Soak tamarind in warm water and extract its juice
mustard seeds
Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds
fenugreek, channa dal and curry leaves
When it begins to crackle, add fenugreek, channa dal and curry leaves. Saute for 30 seconds
onion, red chilli added
Add onion and red chillies
onion turns soft
Saute until onion becomes soft
sambar powder added
Add sambar powder
stir well
Saute for 15 to 30 seconds
tamarind extract added
Now add the tamarind extract and enough water
jaggery and salt
Add jaggery and salt
close the lid
Close the lid and cook for 15 mins over medium heat and remove from flame
