Andhra Style Fish Curry | Chepala Pulusu | Nellore Fish Curry | No Coconut Recipe

Andra Style Fish Curry with Step by Step Pictures
Finally I have come up with the recipe for Andhra style fish curry. Unlike my native style fish, it has no coconut, lots of tamarind and tomatoes. It is just opposite to my native style cooking. However, I really enjoyed this tangy and spicy fish curry. You can add more chilli powder if your tomato and tamarind is really very sour. You can also balance the heat with tamarind.

Method:

Marinate the fish with the ingredients listed under "for marination". Soak the tamarind in water for 15 minutes and extract its juice.

Purée the tomato and peel the skin of onion. Crush the garlic.

Dry roast the ingredients listed  under "for spice powder" under slow flame and blend it to a smooth powder.

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds. When mustard seeds begin to pop, add curry leaves and crushed garlic.

Add in slitted green chilli, chopped onion and sauté till onion becomes translucent. Now, add in coriander powder, cumin powder, chilli powder, turmeric and salt. Sauté for 30 seconds.

Then, add the puréed tomato and cook for 2 minutes. To this, add the tamarind extract and enough water. Cook for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes, add the fish and cook for 10 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves.

Serve with hot rice.

Note:
  • You can replace the spices masala with readymade powders.
  • You can simply sauté the tomatoes till it becomes mushy instead of adding purée.
  • Adjust the chilli power according to the sourness of the tamarind and tomato.
