Andhra Paruppu Podi Recipe
Picture Updated
Paruppu podi is a famous podi variety in Andhra. It is also known as Kandi podi. It is mostly probably served with plain rice drizzled with little ghee on its top. It has a very nice aroma of dal along with some spices. I have prepared with toor dal and roasted gram. There are many variations of this recipe. You can replace roasted gram with channa dal also. Some people make this with roasted gram alone. I have added garlic so if you hate the smell of garlic in food, you shall skip them.

Kandi Podi
My elder brother is a huge fan of paruppu podi. He never wants anything for breakfast and dinner. All he asks me is paruppu podi and rice. I do not understand how he manage to eat this all the day. But anyway I used to prepare this often just for him.

Paruppu Podi

Ingredients:

Toor dal - 1/2 cup
Fried gram dal - 1/2 cup
Red chilli - 10 to 15 (adjust according to spiciness required)
Garlic - 10 cloves
Pepper - 1/2 tsp (optional)
Cumin - 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida - 1/8 tsp
Curry leaves - a sprig (optional)
Salt - to taste
Oil - few drops

Method:

Heat oil in a pan, roast toor dal and roasted gram dal in a low flame. When it turns golden brown, transfer it to a plate and let it cool.

In the same pan, add cumin, pepper, red chilli, curry leaves and garlic. When everything gets roasted add asafoetida and salt.

Switch off the stove and let everything cool down. Grind everything in blender to fine powder.

Serve with hot rice drizzled with ghee.

Note:
  • This can be done without toor dal. That is, with roasted gram dal alone.
  • If you don't like garlic skip them.
  • Adjust chilli according to spiciness required. Mine was not very spicy.
