Tomato Thokku Recipe for Idli Dosa
Tomato thokku is a quick and easy side dish to complement your hot idli and dosa. The little bit of spiciness from chilli and tangi taste alongside the small chunks of onion, garlic for each bite make it a perfect side dish for a hot plate of idli. It can be prepared in the mean time your idlies are cooked.

Tomato Thokku For Idli Dosa

Prep Time: 5 mins | Cooking Time: 20 mins | Serves: 4

Ingredients:

Tomato - 4
Onion - 2
Garlic - 1 tblspn, finely chopped
Chilli powder - 2 tblspn
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida - a pinch
Sugar - 1/8 tsp
Salt - to taste

For Seasoning:

Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Urad dal - 1 tsp
Red chilli - 1
Curry leaves - fistful

Method:

Finely chop onion and tomatoes.

Heat oil in a pan, add in mustard seeds. Once it start to crackle, add in urad dal, red chilli and curry leaves.

Add in chopped garlic and saute for few seconds, The, add in onion and saute till it becomes translucent.

Then add in chopped tomato, chilli powder, turmeric, salt, sugar and asafoetida. Stir fry till the tomatoes turns mushy. Add 1 cup of water and cook for 15 minutes. Switch off the flame, once desired consistency is reached.

Serve with hot idli, dosa or chapati.

Keep all your ingredients ready

Heat oil in a pan, crackle some mustard seeds. Add in urad dal and red chilli.

Add in chopped garlic

Saute for few seconds

Add in curry leaves

Let the garlic brown a little

Add in finely chopped onion

Stir fry the onion till it becomes translucent

Then, add in chopped tomatoes

chilli powder, turmeric and asafoetida

Add in sugar and salt to taste

Saute till the tomatoes become mushy.

Once tomato turns mushy, add a cup of water. If you add water before it turns mushy, it will not cook properly

Cover with a lid and cook for 10 to 15 minutes

Switch off the flame once desired consistency is reached
