Dealing with a fussy eater is a toughest job in this world. Being a mom of a picky eating kid, I usually try various ways to add all the ingredients. My son likes idli or dosa but refuses to take sambar. He never takes any kind of dal these days. So I used to make adai or make these types of idli. You can make it as plain idli or dosa as well. I personally loved the dosa made with this batter. It was very soft and tasty.

Ingredients:

Idli Rice - 1 cup
Toor dal - 1/2 cup
Urad dal - 1/4 cup

To make upma:(For 6 idlies)

Onion - 2
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
Red chilli - 8
Curry leaves - a sprig
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
Oil - 3 tblspn

Method:

Soak idli rice, toor dal and urad dal separately for 2 hours and grind them into a fine batter. Allow this to ferment overnight or for 8 hours.

The next morning add in salt and mix well. Pour this batter in a idli pan and make idlis. Once cooled crumble the idli and keep aside.

Heat a pan, add mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves. Once mustard seeds splutters, add broken red chillies.

When it begins to change its color, add in turmeric, salt and crumbled idli. Stir well for 2 to 3 minutes. Add little gun powder if required.

Serve with desired chutney.

Note:
  • You can serve it as plain idli or plain dosa as well.

Ingredients for paruppu idli upma
Soak toor dal, idli rice and urad dal(not in picture) for 2 hours
prepare batter
First grind urad dal. Once it is nicely ground add toor dal and idli rice. Grind to a smooth batter
add salt
Add salt and mix well. Let it ferment overnight or for 8 hours
pour batter
Next day, mix well the batter and pour ladleful of batter in each hole of the pan
steam cook
Steam cook the idli for 8 minutes
crumble the idlies
Cool the idlies and crumble it before preparing upma
add seasoning
In a pan, heat little sesame oil. Season with mustard seeds, urad dal and broken red chillies
saute onion
Add in chopped onion, curry leaves and saute till it becomes soft
salt to taste
Add little salt to taste
turmeric
1/4 tsp of turmeric is added
add idli
Then add the crumbled idlies
stir fry
Stir fry for 3 minutes. If you wish, add little gun powder
Dal Idli Upma
It is ready. Serve with your favorite chutney.
